Green  technology, IT in entertainment and media, and web based technology are three new categories in the Swindon-based British Computer Society (BCS) IT Industry Awards 2007 which are now open for entry. Uniting the BCS IT Professional awards and IM awards, the newly named IT Industry awards  set out to recognise professionalism, achievement and innovation in key sectors of the industry.

Winners  will be announced at a presentation ceremony  at the Grosvenor  House  Hotel,  London,  in December,  forming  the culmination  of  a  year  of celebration for  the  BCS'  50th anniversary.

The  awards are the largest of their kind in Europe and are a central  element of the BCS' professionalism in IT programme, with  the  aim of showcasing how organisations can achieve  a truly professional approach to delivery of IT within business. In  light of this BCS has enlisted support for the awards from two  leading industry bodies which are also involved with the ProfIT programme; Intellect and NCC.

David  Clarke,  BCS chief executive, said:  "This is  a  very exciting year for us and as such we have taken the opportunity to  refresh  the  awards, joining with NCC and Intellect  and introducing  new  categories which reflect some  of the  most important issues for IT in the present and future.

"Our  awards are a great showcase for professionalism in  IT, highlighting  the  importance  of  technology within  today's business environment where IT plays an integral role from the board room to customer communications."

The BCS IT Industry awards are the leading hallmark of success amongst  practitioners in the IT industry today. As standards of  sophistication, business acumen and skill in the IT world are  continually developing, the role of IT and its effective management is critical across the whole spectrum of business. These  cross-industry awards recognise,  promote  and acclaim excellence,  professionalism, innovation and  the outstanding achievements to which individuals and groups contribute.

David  Payette, managing director for NEC UK, the main sponsor for  the awards said: "As an organisation which has a heritage of  innovation spanning a hundred years, we applaud innovation in  design, implementation, and optimisation of technology. We are proud to be associated with the BCS IT Industry awards and look forward to seeing the innovative solutions put forward by the  project managers and technology experts from  across the UK."
