The new David Lloyd Leisure Club has opened its doors to become the company’s 60th centre boasting a world first in gym equipment.

The club, at the newly created Latham Road, near Motorola at Groundwell, welcomed dozens of new members across the threshold - just some of the hundreds who have been flocking to join the club since its arrival was heralded earlier this year.

They were the first to try out the facilities, including new iPod compatible Technogym equipment; the Swindon centre is the first place in the world to use the high-tech machinery, which is due to be rolled out across the other David Lloyd Leisure clubs around the country.

Liam McGuilp, general manager, said he was very excited to be open at last. “This is the 60th David Lloyd Leisure club and the best so far. We had long wanted to site a club in Swindon because, with so many families, it seemed to be an ideal location and judging by the response we were not wrong.”

First across the door were friends and business partners Catherine Neat and Sarah Bannon.

Catherine, 38, from Taw Hill, and Sarah, 38, from Ash Brake, enjoyed using the new equipment and plan to go regularly.

Mother-of-three Catherine said: “I thought it was very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful; very welcoming. I haven’t been a member of a gym before but I have been to one as a guest and in comparison David Lloyd Leisure is outstanding. The equipment is excellent, really easy to use.”

Catherine and Sarah, both signed up for membership in April. “One of the things that attracted me was the teen gym they run for children, which will really appeal to my son; also the pools, as my daughter is a swimmer,” said Catherine.

Among the facilities are two 25 metre pools, one indoor and the other which has retractable roof so can be outdoor or indoor. There are also indoor and outdoor multi-surface tennis courts, a fully equipped gym, three fitness studios offering a range of exercise classes, and host of spa facilities.
