The New Swindon Company, co-ordinator of regeneration in Swindon, has appointed Dean and Dyball as the contractors for the Wharf Green development, which will be the first stage of realising the vision to transform Swindon’s town centre.

Dean and Dyball, one of the most trusted construction and development companies in the UK, will begin work preparing the site for construction on 3 September, with a view to building taking shape shortly after. It is hoped that work will be completed by Spring 2008.

The Wharf Green development will be the first area to be redeveloped since The New Swindon Company unveiled their plans to regenerate the town centre.

The entire Wharf Green project is being undertaken by The New Swindon Company, on behalf of Swindon Borough Council, with funding from central Government’s Growth Point Fund.

Peter James, chief executive of The New Swindon Company, said: We are excited about Wharf Green - this new development will start to create that lively bustle that has been missing in Swindon for so long. We are also delighted to welcome Dean and Dyball onboard. I have no doubt they will make a fantastic success of the project and I am very much looking forward to seeing the finished result.”

A major part of Wharf Green will be the installation of the first permanent BBC Big Screen in the South of England. Swindon’s screen will be only the ninth in the country, and will become a focal point for community events and activity. It will broadcast a combination of live events, community content, news, sport and entertainment.

Other developments set to take shape in Wharf Green include new paving and street furniture, lighting and public facility refurbishment – all of which will be a major benefit to local people.

Peter James added: “As a first step in regeneration, Wharf Green will be the beginning of a transformation in Swindon. The Big Screen, along with everything else that is being added will bring a real vibrancy and animation to the area, and I hope it will provide the local community with a place they can use and enjoy.”

Dean and Dyball’s regional director, Andy McAdam, said: “We are very pleased to be involved with this milestone redevelopment by The New Swindon Company and look forward to delivering the project successfully for the people of Swindon and the surrounding area.”
